Nestled in the vibrant heart of Bethesda, MD, our recent renovation project at The Christopher has breathed new life into a space that was once in danger of being overshadowed by the uptick in nearby new developments. Working hand-in-hand with the property’s dedicated Council of Unit Owners and armed with a vision to transform a dated design into a timeless aesthetic, our team took on the age-old challenge – balancing creative solutions with project constraints.
The Vision: Timeless Design Meets Modern Living
The primary goal of this renovation was clear: to create a stylish yet enduring environment that would make the building stand out amid the influx of contemporary developments. We wanted to honor the building’s unique architectural features, such as floor-to-ceiling mirrors in the lobby, to not only preserve the current identity of the property but also to prioritize where the project budget would be spent.
Budget-Conscious Creative Solutions
Working within a set budget posed its challenges, but it also inspired innovative solutions. We focused on making impactful changes without compromising quality. For instance, the corridors featured two types of lighting fixtures – instead of replacing both, we instead opted to keep the fixtures at the unit entries and selected new fixtures for the general corridors only that complimented the unit fixtures both in style and light quality.
Color Palette and Materials: A Lasting Impression
Choosing a timeless color palette was crucial to achieving the desired aesthetic. We opted for neutral tones that would appeal to a wide audience, allowing for flexibility in decor while enhancing the building’s architectural features. Accent colors were introduced through carefully selected finishes, ensuring the space felt vibrant yet sophisticated. The floral wallcovering behind the concierge desk highlights that natural focal point and provides much need color and pattern within the space. We also prioritized materials that would withstand the test of time, both in terms of durability and style.
A Standout Transformation
The renovation of The Christopher in Bethesda has been a rewarding project for our team that exemplifies the power of thoughtful design and the importance of a strong client-designer partnership. By updating the building’s dated aesthetic while honoring its original features, we’ve created a timeless environment that stands out in a competitive market.
