Our team recently wrapped up a renovation project at Residences at Rio in Gaithersburg, MD. Located in the Rio at Washingtonian Center, minutes from I-270 and walkable to a plethora of shops and entertainment, this 136-unit building has a lot going for it. One downside was the two outdated lobby spaces. These spaces were underutilized and had seen many years since their last refresh. Property owner Bernstein Management Company hired our team at SR/A Interior Design to renovate and reactive these spaces for residents.
The design in the main lobby incorporates both natural materials and elegant fixtures. The goal in this space was to give a timeless feeling of welcome and ease for residents, guests and prospective tenants. By replacing the outdated floor tile and creating a statement wall with natural wood plank, among other improvements, our team was able to give the main lobby modern, yet classic refresh.
The secondary lobby used to serve as little more than a walk-through for residents heading to and from the parking facilities. By rethinking the space plan and adding built-in millwork, SR/A activated this space into a desirable amenity for residents. Banquette and counter seating provide touch-down areas where residents can work remotely, while the custom built-in shelving, filled with antiques and unique treasures, gives the space a cozy feeling of home.
SR/A oversaw the design, documentation, construction, procurement and installation of this renovation project. It was a joy for us as designers to see the spaces transformed and hear positive feedback from residents on the renovations.
